Why Customers Still Prefer the Simple Pleasures of In-Person Shopping

Despite the pandemic, retail studies continue to demonstrate that customers still prefer to shop in person. In fact, in a 2021 report on the state of consumer behavior, 46% of customers said that given the choice, they would still choose in-person shopping vs. online. And 90% of those same respondents claimed that they are more likely to return to a store if they have a positive “offline” experience. What’s more, 61% stated that they would actually spend more at a retail space, based on that same experience.

So, what does this have to do with your retail business?

After months of staying indoors, customers are re-emerging into the public sphere; many of whom are discovering their appreciation for the simple pleasures of in-person shopping (i.e. positive experiences).

“Experience combined with a diverse selection of retail stores and businesses are what drive shoppers in, and it’s also what keeps them coming back,” said Holly Rome, Executive Vice President of Leasing at Rosedale Center. “At Rosedale, we’re all about creating unique experiences that attract more than 14 million visitors annually. And we haven’t let the pandemic slow us down yet.”

A Better Shopping Experience Brings More Customers In

As one of the top-rated shopping destinations in Minnesota, Rosedale offers both brands and retailers the ideal location to set up shop and benefit from Rosedale’s growing number of one-of-kind experiences.

From seasonal and holiday-themed events to art galleries shows, pop-ups, and augmented reality games that get shoppers up and moving around the shopping center, Rosedale offers businesses more brand exposure and unique opportunities to grow their customer base.

“Having your business, whether it’s a traditional or non-traditional retail store, centrally located between the Twin Cities is already an advantage you can expect when you lease a space in our shopping center,” continued Holly. “Now, pair that with all the fun, interactive experiences we offer our guests, and you can expect to attract even larger audiences and engage with new shoppers that you may not have known were in your targeted demographic.”

Retail Trends Continue to Change, but In-Person Shopping Is Here to Stay

Before 2020, retail trends were already showing that people were gravitating away from shopping online and were preferring to travel to a physical location for the “physical” experience of shopping (e.g. touch, smell, see, taste, etc.). In fact, that’s why many popular digital native brands were starting to open physical locations across the country.

Though the pandemic made it so customers had no choice but to choose online vs. in person shopping, we are now experiencing what Forbes refers to as “lockdown fatigue”, which means physical retail can expect a big comeback. However, they, too, noted that in order to get shoppers back inside the door, businesses will need to focus on “improving the experimental” shopping experience.

At Rosedale, this is already covered for you!
